In the Shadow of Satellites
by Amanda Dick
Release date: 22 August 2016
Memories are precious, and for Sian Bennett, they are fleeting. On 22 February 2011, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocks Christchurch, New Zealand. Sian was there, along with her husband and baby son. What happened that day is a mystery; all she remembers is waking up in hospital five months later, alone.
Two long years pass, and the memories continue to disappear into the black hole that was opened up the day of the quake. Life becomes a perilous journey lived on a tightrope that stretches between the past and the present. Retreating to a lakeside cottage in Rotorua, she shies away from a world she no longer understands.
When Luke Lancaster moves into the derelict cottage beyond the trees, he respects his reclusive neighbour’s silent plea for privacy. Now half a world away from his native North Carolina, he has seen war, misery and chaos. Along with his dog, Geezer, he lives with a few ghosts of his own.
What begins as a fragile friendship leads to a much deeper connection, in which truth, lies, love and pain are intimately bound. Even in paradise, shadows lurk.
A slow-burning tale of loss and love, stoked in the flames of fate and superstition, it is ignited by the power of hope.

About the Author –
Amanda Dick is a night-owl, coffee addict, movie buff and music lover. She loves to do DIY, believes in love at first sight, in women’s intuition and in following your heart. She is rather partial to dark chocolate and believes in the power of a good vanilla latte.
What lights her fire is writing stories about real people in trying situations. She is insanely curious about how we, as human beings, react when pushed to the edge. Most of all, she enjoys writing about human behaviour – love, loss, joy, grief, friendship and the complexity of relationships in general.
After living in Scotland for five years, she has now settled back home in New Zealand, where she lives with her husband and two children.
My Review –
Thank you so very much Ms.Dick for sending me a copy of In the Shadow of Satellites!! You made my week!! I am beyond honored and grateful!! 😀
5 Moving Forward is easier said than done Stars!!
This was my first time reading Ms.Dick’s work and i absolutely fell in love with this story!! In the Shadow of Satellites is thought provoking and shows the horrifying reality of losing someone you love. Loss isn’t an easy subject to read about at least for me it isn’t but Amanda wrote about it in a remarkable way that I’ve never seen before in a book. This story is extremely unique, heartbreaking, beautiful, raw, and a real Eye-opener. I felt every single emotion pouring from the pages and my heart ached right along with the main characters. Memories are something I treasure dearly and I really enjoyed that it focused on those. Also, I loved that it took place in New Zealand!!
Ms.Dick touched my heart and broke it at the same time. I’m definitely checking out the rest of her work as soon as possible!! I could kick myself for not having picked up her books sooner. 🙂
Sian Bennett was a character who lost her whole world on a tragic day in 2011. After everything that happened she had to start life over again but not really living. Her mind was a terrible place to be lost in when she was alone. The past and present collided for her daily. What she went through broke my heart and I wished that I could have taken her pain away. I loved her friendship with Ana and Chris!! I hoped in the end she would be able to find the happiness she deserved and move forward without guilt.
Luke Lancaster was a character who knew loss all too well. Leaving North Carolina was the fresh start he needed but he never thought he’d meet a kindred spirit in the form of a woman who said everything without having to speak a word. When he first appears in story I couldn’t help but want to learn more about him with every turn of the page. He was such a sweetheart and in my opinion one great hero. I loved his dog Geezer with all of my heart!! In the end I hoped he wouldn’t give up on Sian and I’d find out what he went through.
This is the story of two people who know what it means to just exist and feel numb. It shows how others can take parts of us with them when they leave. Most importantly it shows how we all have the strength to move forward even when it doesn’t seem possible.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a read that’s deep yet has a light side in the form of hope. It’s one that many can relate to in the sense that we’ve all lost someone we love and the how emotions can be so very overpowering at times that it’s difficult to even breathe at times. If you pick up a book in 2016 make sure that its this one. You won’t regret picking it up!! One-Click it today!! I hope you love it!! 5 Stars all around!! 🙂
